During the height of their fame, Matthew Broderick and Jennifer Grey were holidaying in Northern Ireland where he was driving. He veered into the wrong lane and collided head on with another car, killing the other driver and passenger. Before he began driving, Broderick had asked for directions from a police officer but had decided to go his own way. He was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, and faced up to five years in jail. He was later convicted for careless driving, and fined $175 for the accident, a fine the family of the victims reportedly called “a travesty of justice” at the time.
Edit: Some of the comments question the validity of this answer as this was an accident and while that is true, there should have been some form of restitution for the victims’ family who lost people they loved. The fine paid by Broderick was measly compared to what he earned and there was no mention of any formal apology or any other kind of comeuppance so even though it was and might have been truly an accident, they could have reacted better to the whole tragedy. Jennifer Grey was also said to have used the accident as an excuse to have plastic surgery on her nose which has since been disputed and given that the accident cost two people’s lives, either way, she shouldn’t have mentioned it as the reason for her nose job especially when you don’t need an excuse to get one in Hollywood.
