Mussolini was the fascist dictator of Italy between 1922 and 1943. He allied the country with the nazis, he persecuted political opponents and dissidents, and over all ruined the lives of everyone living in and around Italy at the time.
Italians wanted him dead and buried.
Mussolini was not executed by hanging, rather he was shot to death by communist and antifascist Walter Audisio, after which his body would be taken to Piazzale Loreto, where it would be hung on display alongside his lover and some other fascists.
During this display, members of the crowd could line up to shoot Mussolini’s corpse with a rifle, and later to bash his head with a hammer.
