What films would have been a sure Oscar/Academy Award win if it hadn’t been up against another terrific film the same year?

Deera

The Shawshank Redemption.

1994 was a brutally tough Oscars year, featuring such classic films The Lion KingForrest Gump, and Pulp Fiction.

Going into the Academy Awards, it was generally considered a two-way race between Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction.

Forrest Gump took the night, winning for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Editing, and Best Visual Effects.

And, of course, The Lion King, as an animated feature, wasn’t even nominated in the Best Picture category.

But in the years and decades since The Shawshank Redemption has grown in popular and critical esteem.

Today it is the highest-rated film of all time on IMDB’s list of the top 250, whereas Pulp Fiction sits at number eight Forrest Gump sits at number 12.

While it was a box office failure when first released, the film is now considered one of the best of not just the decade, but of all time.
