Having survived a plane crash, I would say this:
- Put your passport, phone, and money in your trouser pockets – you’ll need your ID card when you land.
- Count the number of rows separating you from the emergency exit – 2 at the front and 2 at the back – and prepare to exit from either side (actually you’ll count again because you already did it when you sat down, right?)
- Put your glasses in your shirt pocket, coat pocket… (they’ll fly off on impact)
- Bring extra clothes (sweatshirt or jacket) to stay warm afterwards or have first aid equipment on hand.
- Put “vital” medications in your pockets
- Forget your hand luggage – you won’t be able to take it
- Prepare for the impact, put your arms between your legs (elbows hurt when they hit the armrests)
- Only 10% of crashes (or less) are fatal, so you still have a chance of surviving.
- On the ground, move away from the aircraft and follow the instructions of the staff – they will be just as lost as you are.
