What’s the nicest thing anyone has ever done for you?

Deera

A long time ago I went to my parents’ home for Christmas, on college break. While sitting around the house with nothing to do I started reading the Christmas cards. I noticed one of the cards had a last name, “Four Horns”. So I asked my mom what the story was behind the card.

You need to know that my mom was a registered nurse in a Public Health Hospital on a Lakota Indian Reservation for 37 years. Here is her story:

One night a young girl came in with a baby in great distress. They started losing the baby and had to start CPR. After a period of time the doctor called the life saving measures and told my mom to stop the CPR. She paused and the doctor left the ER… She looked at the young girl and she said I could not resist those beautiful brown eyes pleading for me to save her baby. So she started CPR again with in a short period of time she got a heart beat and color came back and lo and behold a crying baby!

That was 20 years from that Christmas and every year that Four Horns girl would send my mom a Christmas card telling her how well the child was doing.

It was nice for my mom to relate to me how she hung in there and didn’t give up. It was nice that the girl reminded my mom of how important she was.

Here is a picture of my mom… doing her thing:

The thing in the back ground is an old fashion incubator. The kid is a preemie she really liked taking care of them. I think it was her mission in life to save as many of them as she could. Fyi mom passed away in June of 1992.
