In October 2022, high school teammates and college wrestlers Kendell Cummings and Brady Lowry went shed-hunting in Wyoming’s rugged Shoshone National Forest. Suddenly, a grizzly ambushed Lowry, ripping him to the ground and clawing at him. Without a second thought, Cummings leapt into action. He sprinted at the bear, yelling and throwing rocks before grabbing it by the ear to pull it off his friend.
The bear turned on Cummings, badly mauling him, biting his arms, head, and torso, while crashing his skull. Yet somehow it eventually retreated, and both men survived. Lowry, despite a broken arm and puncture wounds, mustered a signal and called 911. Fellow teammates and rescuers carried the injured men out to safety and medical care.
