Wouldn’t it be upsetting for trans actors to play trans characters who are still going through transition?

It’s acting. Just, acting. Playing a part. Sir Lawrence Olivier was shocked to see Dustin Hoffman “method act” by running actual marathons daily while portraying a guy who does so in Marathon Man. The feat left Hoffman with insomnia and on the brink of complete exhaustion…

“My dear boy,” Olivier famously suggested, “have you tried acting?”

You don’t always have to embody the role you play in every physical way. And sometimes playing a role can be painful, or hard. You may suffer from alcoholism and play an alcoholic character — Will Arnett knows all about this. Or portray a sex addict and be a sex addict, as David Duchovny has done. And yes that’s hard. But it’s also, ya know, your job?

So sometimes a trans person would play a part he or she is uncomfortable with. So would a straight, or gay, or black, or white, or asian actor or actress. It’s literally their job.
